THE PSYCHEDELIC REVIEW, 1963-1971Presented For Your Edification by Patrick The Lama
Dick Alpert evaluates the latest Sandoz shipment, 1963 Tim Leary describes his plans to become the most dangerous man alive, 1963 Ralph Metzner says grace at the Millbrook dinner table, 1966. Uncle Tim, Uncle Al and large foreign visitor wait patiently.
The granddaddy of the various psychedelic publications of the 1960s has aged remarkably well, mainly due to its professional editorship (I believe Ralph Metzner was the main guy) and a serious academic tone. Those expecting crazy ramblings or Learyesque propaganda will be surprised. The list of contributors is very impressive, though it should be pointed out that much of the material was reprinted from earlier sources. The magazine's early years deal primarily with ethno-botanic, medical and sociological topics, while there is a clear shift towards getting with the freakout hippie times in 1967. The later issues are still well worth checking out and have lots of far out graphics from various famous artists. The magazine folded in 1971.
"The Psychedelic Review" sold fairly well from the outset, and all original issues can be tracked down with a bit of patience. The first four issues were reprinted sometime in the late 1960s, and there are also two different original runs for issues #1-2. For a sample, check out the "Psychedelic Reader", which is an anthology book of selected material from the early years. Of the individual issues, #4 and #10 are somewhat less interesting, and can be saved for last if you're on the hunt.
